For those of you itching for a fix of the Cumberbatch, BBC has you covered with a brand new drama starring the ‘Sherlock’ actor himself.

Titled The Child in Time, the series will star Benedict Cumberbatch and Kelly MacDonald (Boardwalk Empire, Black Mirror, Trainspotting) as two heartbroken parents whose child went missing years prior. The show will focus on how the two of them cope with their daughter’s tragic disappearance, all whilst trying to reach a point of healing.

Fans of Ian McEwan, the award-winning author behind several infamous novels, such as Atonement and Enduring Love, will delight at the knowledge that this upcoming series will be an adaptation of his best-selling 1987 book by the same name. Many of McEwan’s novels, such as the two mentioned above, have snagged themselves highly praised reworkings in the past, starring a range of Hollywood names, such as Keira Knightley, James McAvoy and Daniel Craig.

The Child in time wont be the first Ian McEwan adaptation that Cumberbatch has starred in either. Back in 2007, he also played the sinister character of Paul Marshall in Atonement, prior to his stint as BBC’s Sherlock.

The recently released trailer depicts Cumberbatch as a father who loses his daughter whilst out shopping. Upon realising that she’s disappeared, he dashes home in a panic to inform his wife, played by Kelly MacDonald. What follows is a moving depiction of their journey to find closure. Themes such as forgiveness, healing and acceptance come into play throughout the tale, providing what could possibly be a tear-jerking experience for many viewers of the show.

In a statement, Cumberbatch expressed his excitement about the project:

“I read the novel years ago and it stayed with me – profound, beautiful and very moving. Only Ian McEwan could write about loss with such telling honesty.” He said.
