Here's How Often You Should Be Having Sex

If you type “how often is” into Google, the first thing that comes up is “how often is it to normal to have sex?”

Right before,“how often is it normal to poop?”, and “how often is it normal to cry?”.

It’s fair to say that none of those questions has a definite answer. Cry as often as you want, poo between three times a day and once every three days (apparently), and have sex as much as keeps you satisfied.

But then how often is that? A study once found that couples having sex less than once a week reported lower levels of happiness than couples doing it on a weekly basis. They found that you “don’t need sex everyday” (which I’m sure is a relief to a lot of people), but that to keep things intimate, you need to be doing it pretty regularly.

Heterosexual men over the age of 18 (both single and those in relationships), report having sex on average 63 times a year, while heterosexual women reckon that they do it 55 times.

The average British person will have sex 5,778 times in their life (which equates to about 2,808 hours, or 117 days), and 3% of us reckon that we do it every day.

Most studies, however, are keen to stress the fact that you shouldn’t be putting pressure on yourself when it comes to quantity. Sure, your neighbour Ned might be doing it daily, but that doesn’t make you – love-making only twice a month – abnormal. Most people reckon that we should be focusing on quality, not quantity.

As sexologist Michael Aaron told Insider:

“I think focusing on frequency is detrimental since it adds unnecessary pressure. Most important is that both people get the kind of sex they want.”

So apparently it doesn’t matter how much you’re doing it, so long as you’re having fun.

Apparently having sex gives you a two day “high”, which researchers think correlates with our “natural cycles”. It takes about three days for a man’s sperm count to reach “peak concentration”, while 48 hours is the longest that sperm can survive inside the female reproductive system.
