What's Coming Out At The Cinema In June?

Fancy spending June in the cinema?

Here’s our pick of what you should see:

Wonder Woman (01/06)

What’s it about? An origins story, it looks at how Amazonian warrior Diana Prince met a WW2 pilot, and was inspired to leave her home to fight a foreign war. In doing so, she discovered both the full extent of her powers, and her destiny…

Who’s in it? Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright and David Thewlis.

Why should I go watch it? After the disappointments of Suicide Squad and Batman vs Superman, early indications are that this movie is actually pretty good.

My Life As A Courgette (02/06)

What’s it about? A police officer helps the newly-orphaned Icare (better known by the nickname Zucchini) adjust to his new life in a foster home.

Who’s in it? Will Forte, Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), Ellen Page (Juno) and Amy Sedaris (Bojack Horseman).

Why should I go watch it? Nominated for an Oscar, this is a delightful and deeply moving story that both kids and adults can enjoy. You’ll probably cry, but in the good way.

My Cousin Rachel (09/06)

What’s it about? After his guardian dies mysteriously, a young wealthy Englishman suspects that his cousin Rachel – an older widow – might have had something to do with it. He plots revenge, but things get complicated when he realises that he may be falling in love with her…

Who’s in it? Rachel Weisz, Sam Claflin, Holliday Grainger (The Riot Club) and Iain Glen (Game of Thrones).

Why should I go watch it? It looks tense, gripping and oddly sexy and it’s adapted from a Daphne Du Maurier book.

The Mummy (09/06)

What’s it about? A reboot of the Mummy series, this sees an ancient, angry princess awakened from her crypt. She’s pretty pissed off about the whole thing, and wreaks havoc on humanity.

Who’s in it? Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella (Star Trek: Beyond), Jake Johnson (New Girl), Russell Crowe, Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders) and Courtney B. Vance (The People vs O.J. Simpson).

Why should I go watch it? To laugh? Who knows though, it might actually end up being good…

Gifted (16/06)

What’s it about? Raising his child prodigy niece Mary after the death of his sister, Frank is drawn into a custody battle with his mother. While he wants to give Mary a normal childhood – and not send her to special schools – his mother thinks that she isn’t being allowed to reach her full potential.

Who’s in it? Chris Evans, Jenny Slate (Obvious Child), Lindsay Duncan (About Time) and Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures).

Why should I go watch it? To see Captain America actor Chris Evans in a dramatic role – this film looks powerful, and life-affirming.

Nails (16/06)

What’s it about? After being paralysed in a terrible accident, a woman realises that her hospital room is inhabited by a very malevolent ghost…

Who’s in it? Shauna McDonald (The Descent) and Ross Noble (The Circle).

Why should I go watch it? For some guilt-free, soapy horror.

Rough Night (16/06)

What’s it about? Kind of like a female version of The Hangover, this sees a group of friends on a wild bachelorette party accidentally kill a male stripper. They then – probably inadvisably – attempt to cover his death up.

Who’s in it? Scarlett Johansson, Zoë Kravitz (Big Little Lies), Kate McKinnon (Ghostbusters), Ilana Glazer (Broad City), Demi Moore and Jillian Bell (22 Jump Street).

Why should I go watch it? The cast is pretty impressive, and it definitely has the potential to be funny. Only time will tell…

Baby Driver (28/06)

What’s it about? Directed by Edgar Wright, this is about a young getaway driver who is coerced into taking part in one last heist…

Who’s in it? Lily James (Cinderella), Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars), Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey and Jon Bernthal (Daredevil)

Why should I go watch it? Pretty much everyone who saw this movie at film festivals said it was f*cking awesome, and given the trailer, we’re inclined to believe them…

A Man Called Ove (30/06)

What’s it about? A grumpy old man makes the decision to take his own life, but every time he actually tries to do it, he’s interrupted by his boisterous neighbours.

Who’s in it? Rolf Lassgard and Bahar Pars

Why should I go watch it? If it’s anything like the book that it’s based on, this will be a deeply moving, funny, charming, life-affirming and optimistic movie. Not to be missed.

Despicable Me 3 (30/06)

What’s it about? Gru has a twin brother that he never knew about, and they finally meet in this third Despicable movie.

Who’s in it? Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Steve Coogan, Julie Andrews, Trey Parker (South Park), Jenny Slate and Miranda Cosgrove

Why should I go watch it? It’ll be cute and fun.

The House (30/06)

What’s it about? After spending their daughter’s college fund, parents Scott and Kate resort to opening an illegal casino in an effort to get rich quick.

Who’s in it? Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler, Jason Mantzoukas and Allison Tolman (Krampus).

Why should I go watch it? Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell are both incredibly talented comic actors, and this looks like it could be a whole lot of fun.
