The Alternate Ending For 'Get Out' Has Been Released, And It's Depressing As Hell

Spoiler alert: If you haven’t seen Get Out yet (what rock have you been living under?), it would be best for you not to read ahead.  We’re going to be spoiling the heck out of the plot for you.

Whilst this alternate ending is dark AF, one could argue that it’s also quite realistic too.

If you weren’t cheering when Chris actually got out of that house in the ending of Get Out, then you must not have been paying attention. Daniel Kaluuya has received an overwhelming amount of praise for his performance in the film, with many dubbing his portrayal of Chris an expressive masterpiece. The film itself has received one of the highest ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, reaching up to 100% back when it was showing in theatres.

The film that we all saw had a good ending for the hero. Chris managed to defeat everyone in the Armitage household and the finale scene saw his friend, Rod, come to his aid. A happy ending for all, right?

Well, I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who thought that Chris would be arrested when the police car appeared in those final moments. Despite him being in danger, he immediately lifted his hands into the air – because even he knew how the real world works.

According to Jordan Peele, audiences would have gotten a glimpse into this ‘real world‘ with what would have been the original ending. On the BuzzFeed podcast, Another Round, it was revealed by one of the hosts that Chris was almost going to be arrested by the actual police:

“There is an alternate ending in which the cops actually come at the end. He gets locked up and taken away for slaughtering an entire family of white people and you know he’s never getting out.”

This version of the ending has now been released on YouTube. In it, Chris is caught by the police and sent to jail. When Rod visits him in prison, Chris resists any attempt to try and plead his case, simply insisting that he’s good. “I stopped it.” He tells his friend. “I stopped it.”

Peele has previously explained that he came up with the alternate ending to highlight the fact that racism isn’t over:

People were saying, ‘We’ve got Obama so racism is over, let’s not talk about it.’ That’s what the movie was meant to address […] So the ending in that era was meant to say, look, ‘You think race isn’t an issue? Well at the end, we all know this is how this movie would end right here.’

Whilst we can all thank Peele for not going down that super depressing route, some have said that perhaps that’s the ending we should have gotten. Peele chose to go with the ending of Rod showing up so that audiences could have a satisfying finale, but reality doesn’t always grant us that. Perhaps if Peele had chosen to end the film with the alternate version, then the film’s message about racism might have resonated a lot more.

Having said that, however, nothing can beat that moment when Chris finally gets out. Satisfying is definitely the right word to describe that ending.

Another alternate ending reportedly saw Chris eventually end up stuck in the sunken place, with his body taken over.

What do you think of the alternate endings? Do you think we got the right one?
