'Cushioning' Is The Latest Dating Trend And You've Probably Done It Before
First came ‘ghosting’, then came ‘benching’, ‘breadcrumbing and now ‘cushioning’.
No, it’s not a weird sex thing… That I know of, anyway. It’s a dating thing that’s been happening since the beginning of time, but we just finally have a name for it.
Before it was given the name ‘cushioning’ you might have simply referred to it as ‘unfair’ or ‘vaguely cheaty’. Basically, when someone starts texting other people in the lead up to breaking up with someone (in order to cushion the blow of the impending separation), they are ‘cushioning’.
Are you thinking about that time someone was almost definitely using you as a cushion to their break-up? Yeah, me too.
See, this is why dating is pointless. #cushioning

UrbanDictionary defines it as: “A dating technique where along with your main piece you also have several ‘cushions’, other people you’ll chat and flirt with to cushion the potential blow of your main break-up and not leave you alone.”
Essentially, the ‘cushions’ are being led on while the main boo is being low-key emotionally cheated on. We all know someone who’s done it, if you haven’t done it accidentally in some way yourself.
And some quick advice if you have a sneaky feeling you’re a cushion, get out as soon as you can. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
