The 13 Most Popular Netflix Original Series
Given that Netflix don’t release their ratings, it can be difficult to know which of their original series perform the best.
Does Orange is the New Black beat House of Cards? Do people prefer Daredevil, or Jessica Jones? Is there anyone left on the planet who hasn’t seen Stranger Things?
Just when we thought that we’d never get an answer, “social media research firm” Fizziology threw some resources into a fairly exhaustive study. Going off how much “buzz” each series generates (so how many of us tweet, Facebook post or Instagram about it), they’ve come up with a list of the 13 most popular series.
Check it out.
13. Grace and Frankie
In comedy Grace and Frankie, two women discover that their husbands haven’t just been business partners for the past 20 years, they’ve been lovers… With its third season dropping onto Netflix last month, Grace and Frankie has already been renewed for a fourth.
12. House of Cards
Unsurprisingly, Netflix’s long-running (and award winning) political drama House of Cards makes the list. Starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, it sees a congressman and his wife go to any means necessary to get to the top…
We’re slightly surprised to see Bloodline – a drama about a family with some deep dark secrets – on this list. Sure, people who watch it seem to like it, but do really that many people watch it?! Apparently so…
10. Master of None
Parks and Rec star Aziz Ansari came into his own with this Golden Globe award winning comedy. About a 30-year-old actor living in New York, it’s a warmly funny look at friendship, relationships, and the trials and tribulations that come with a career,
9. The OA
Netflix’s second biggest sci-fi is The OA – a thriller about a blind young woman who reappears after seven years of being missing, her sight mysteriously restored. Brit Marling stars.
8. Orange is the New Black
Probably Netflix’s most famous original, Orange is the New Black looks at the lives of women incarcerated in Litchfield Penitentiary. It’s had four seasons so far, and has been renewed for at least another three.
7. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Tina Fey’s Netflix comedy looks at a woman adapting to real life, after having been held captive in an underground bunker – believing that the world had ended – for years. Stars Ellie Kemper, Jane Krakowski and the inimitable Tituss Burgess.
6. Black Mirror
Charlie Brooker’s six new Black Mirror episodes were certainly well received on Netflix. All imagining what a dystopian future might look like, they saw life after death, vigilante justice, and nightmarish VR that – to be honest – probably isn’t that far off from becoming reality.
5. Stranger Things
Probably one of our favourite TV shows ever (not just on Netflix), Stranger Things was a nostalgic 80s science fiction that focused on a group of kids searching for their missing friend. A word-of-mouth hit, it is no surprise to us that this generated a lot of online buzz.
4. Luke Cage
The only Marvel series to make it onto this list, Luke Cage’s eponymous hero escaped prison in this origins story.
3. Fuller House
Netflix rebooted 1980s sitcom Full House, and apparently, that was a great idea. People went mad for Fuller House, the third season of which should drop later this year.
2. Chasing Cameron
We’ll be honest, we’ve actually never heard of Chasing Cameron. IMDB tells us that it’s a reality TV show about a Vine star, so we suppose that it makes sense that it’s generated a lot of online buzz…
1. 13 Reasons Why
Netflix’s most recent original is also apparently its most popular. The story of how teenager Hannah Baker came to take her own life, it’s a powerful, unapologetic look at some difficult issues (namely sexual assault, bullying and suicide). Not to be missed.
