What Is The Purple 'Trash Dove' And Where Did It Come From?
Before we start, it’s definitely a pigeon. Honestly no clue where this dove nonsense came from but whatever.
So yeah, you’ll have noticed that a shit load of purple birds have been taking over the comments section on Facebook and you probably thought at first “huh. That’s weird” and now you probably think “oh for fuck’s sake. Fuck Facebook”. But hey, that’s just a guess.
Ironically though, recently I’ve been seeing a load more of the reaction memes of people decapitating the ‘trash doves’ than I have the actual birds. It’s like people are trying to preempt it and, in turn, looking like moany idiots. Having said that, top comment on this article will almost definitely be a trash dove.
But where are they from? Well, Syd Weiler, a Florida-based illustrator launched her range of stickers to Facebook earlier this month and no one cared. But after that, something weird and internetty happened. A Thai page uploaded a video of the bird in a dance off with a cat and it got over 4 million views.
So Thailand were obsessed with the bird after that. With that in mind, Weiler drew a picture of the dove holding a Thai flag in its foot, thanking the Thai people for their use of the sticker.
This was deemed offensive though as the flag was being held in the birds foot so she made some changes…
But what does it mean and why is it so popular? Well the BBC’s Rozina Sini said:
“perhaps its ambiguity is one of the reasons it is so popular“
With The Verge’s Kaitlyn Tiffany saying
“birds are funny, and flailing is a common response to the trips and trials of every life on the web“
So no real answers there. My theory is far more groundbreaking and is sure to cause some ripples; People are annoying. You tell them to stop doing things and they just do it more.
It’ll go eventually.
