Mark Zuckerberg To Donate 99% Of Facebook Shares To Celebrate Birth Of His Daughter

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan welcomed their daughter into the world last week, and to celebrate, the couple have announced that they will be donating 99% of their Facebook shares to good causes.

In an open letter to his baby daughter Max, Zuckerberg wrote:

“Your mother and I don’t yet have the words to describe the hope you give us for the future. Your new life is full of promise, and we hope you will be happy and healthy so you can explore it fully. You’ve already given us a reason to reflect on the world we hope you live in.
Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today.”
And Mark intends to be proactive in making his daughter’s world a better place.
Over the course of their lives, he and Priscilla will give away 99% of the money they earn from Facebook – which Mark created during his time at Harvard University. This amounts to $45 billion (£30 billion).
The couple will invest in “advancing human potential and promoting equality” – so curing disease, harnessing clean energy, eliminating poverty and empowering everyone, to name just a few of the goals outlined by Zuckerberg in his letter.
He ended it by saying:
“Max, we love you and feel a great responsibility to leave the world a better place for you and all children. We wish you a life filled with the same love, hope and joy you give us. We can’t wait to see what you bring to this world.”
Everyone from Melinda Gates to Shakira has commented on Zuckerberg’s letter, congratulating him and Priscilla on the birth of their daughter.
