Hatred Of Noisy Eating And Slurping Actually Has Scientific Name



Most of us can’t help but be a bit grossed out when people eat loudly, especially if it’s in our ear or over our shoulder. And everyone hates the sound of nails on a chalkboard and cutlery on plates, right? 

At worst, most of us would probably just tut or make a passive aggressive comment in the direction of the perpetrator, right?

Have these sounds ever made you feel panicked, disgusted, or even so angry you feel you could physically hurt someone?

That’s the difference between a day where you got out of the wrong side of the bed and those who suffer from misophonia.

Misophonia literally means ‘hatred of sound’ and sufferers are characterised by having an adverse reaction to specific noises or sounds, known as ‘triggers’.


These can be things like eating noises (chewing, sucking, slurping), heels clacking on pavements, sniffling (exam halls, anyone?), or loud typing. Yikes.

The term was coined by two US scientists, Pawel and Margaret Jastreboff, in 2001 and there is no known cure for the condition. Symptoms typically begin to show themselves during the pre-teen years and trigger sounds are most typically eating, breathing and hand related noises.

Misophonia UK recommends seeing your GP and asking to be referred to a consultant familiar with the condition. Treatments currently offered include Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and psychotherapeutic hypnotherapy.

‘When I first read about it, it took me about 10 seconds to realise that that’s what I had,’ says Tom, 33, from London.

‘If you’re in any doubt, then the chances are you don’t have it. When you’re experiencing an episode it’s an all-encompassing, can’t-think-of-anything-else, experience and the overriding emotions are rage and panic.’ He explained.

He adds: ‘It was actually really strange discovering other people had this, because I genuinely didn’t know it was “a thing”. I just assumed I had a weird super-sensitivity to noise and a quick temper – even though I’m not like that in any other aspect of my life.’

‘Think of a horror movie where you’re waiting for the bad guy to come through the door. It’s like that, you physically tense up.’
