Pregnant Mother Suffers A Fatal Stroke, Doctors Take A ‘Leap of Faith’ to Save Her Baby
22-year-old Karla Perez was pregnant with a baby boy when she went to hospital complaining about a terrible headache.
Doctors feared the worst and their thoughts were soon confirmed when, sadly, Karla suffered a stroke which left her brain dead whilst still carrying her baby.
“There is nothing in the books about how to provide medical care in this situation” said Dr. Todd Lovgren.
According to KTLA 5 News, after Karla complained of a terrible headache, she suffered a fatal stroke. But she was kept alive by the medical team at a Nebraska hospital on life support to continue her pregnancy for more than seven weeks.
“We took a leap of faith that Karla’s tragedy would turn into a healthy delivery, and baby Angel is the result of that.”
Baby Angel was finally born after 30 weeks and 3 days, at 2 pounds 12 ounces. He remains at the hospital under supervision by the team and Perez’s family, especially his grandmother, Berta Jimenez.
Unfortunately, nothing could be done for Karla, who died days later. However, there are silver linings as she gave renewed life to four more people through organ donations.
Rest in Peace, Karla Perez. You will be sorely missed by your friends and family. And hats of to the quick thinking of the team at the Nebraska Hospital, thanks to them we have the beautiful baby Angel with us.
