Mystical Town Flourishes In The Middle Of The Driest Place On Earth
Those of you lucky so and so’s that have traveled South America may recognise this hot spot. In the midst of one driest climates in the world is an oasis town with lush palm trees and a serene lagoon which is said to have healthful properties.
This place is Huachachina, found in the Atacama Desert in Peru.
The lake is naturally formed, but there is a local legend that a princess was bathing when she was discovered by a hunter and fled, leaving behind a pool of water. Her flowing cloak is what created the surrounding sand dunes.
Peruvians used to visit the rustic town as it was thought that the lagoon had healing powers.
Huacachina is not as isolated as you may expect, the closest town is Ica, only a few kilometers away.

Huacachina has been popular with backpackers for some time now. The main attraction is the sandboarding which has injured more than a few during its time.
