Emma Holten was 17 when her then-boyfriend snapped a series of nude photographs of her. After they broke up, however, those private photos became public without her consent, ending up splashed across the Internet on what have become known as revenge porn websites. Six years later, she’s still experiencing the ramifications of this violation — but she’s not staying quiet about it. The Copenhagen native has opened up about her experiences in a powerful essay for Friktion magazine (English translation), and it’s a must-read.

Holten, now 23, has become an activist in the wake of her experiences, speaking about what it means to be a victim of revenge porn, about what governments need to understand in order to effectively legislate the issue, and more.

“The thing we have in common, actually, is the destructive mentality we are met with. The blatant disregard for our consent and our personhood,” she said in an interview recently “That’s what my essay is about. Non-consensual porn is not only the singular act of sharing the pictures in the first place, it is the systemic lack of respect for the consent of young women. The sexualisation of our abuse. That’s what this is about.”

Emma released a series of photos along with an essay as a project she aptly named ‘CONSENT‘ in which she aims to show herself naked, doing mundane daily things, in an entirely non-sexualised manner to “take back consent”. See her full project for all of the photos and her inspiring essay on the matter.

She finishes up by stating ‘I am not ashamed of my body, but it is mine. Consent is key. Just as rape and sex have nothing to do with each other, pictures shared with and without consent are completely different things.’ Well said, Holton.
