Creepy Eyes

Rosalia Lombardo is known simply as “Sleeping Beauty.” When she passed away in 1920, her body was embalmed by Alfredo Salafia. His method of embalming left her body in tact, making her one of the world’s best preserved mummies.

Not much is known about her life (aside from the fact that she died of pneumonia), but it is after her death that she has drawn huge attention. Many people believe that Rosalia opens and closes her eyes while resting in her glass casket.

Surely this isn’t possible if she’s been dead for 95 years? Before any supernatural theories emerge, it definitely isn’t possible. According to Dario Piombino-Mascali, curator of the Capuchin Catacombs in Sicily, it’s simply a phenomenon.

It’s “an optical illusion produced by the light that filters through the side windows, which during the day is subject to change,” he said in a statement.

What you think you’re seeing is just an optical illusion. Apparently, her eyes are “not completely closed, and indeed they have never been,” Piombino-Mascali added.

Either way, it still seems kinda freaky.
