Lizard Squad Take Credit For Havoc Caused Across Social Media
Did you notice any problems with any of your social media apps this morning? There is a chance that any problem you did notice was due to hacker group Lizard Squad.
Facebook, Instagram, Tinder and MySpace all experienced down-time for around 40 minutes at 6:20am this morning. It is believed the cause of the problems was an outage at Facebook’s HQ which flowed to other networks that use Facebook to authenticate users.
The problems means that Facebook and Instagram mobile users were given the “cannot refresh feed” message, whilst desktop Facebook users struggled to load the website in their browser.
Speaking to The Wall St Journal, a Facebook spokesperson said:
“The issues were not the result of a third party attack, but instead occurred after we introduced a change that affected our configuration systems. We moved quickly to fix the problem, and both services are back to 100% for everyone.”
Lizard Squad, however, were quick to imply that they were behind the problems. Sending a series of tweets to suggest that they had orchestrated the downtime.
It was only yesterday that Lizard Squad took down Malaysia Airlines website. Users logging on to the site were greeted with the picture of a lizard in a top hat, monocle and tuxedo, smoking a pipe. The image was surrounded by the message ‘404 Plane Not Found’, a reference to the airlines’ unexplained loss of flight MH370 last year with 239 people aboard.
Lizard Squad also took down Playstation and XBox over Christmas (Scrooge’s). Do you believe this latest outage was their work, or are they just trying to hitch a ride to notoriety?
