The man with the gun, who has not been identified, spotted the abuse occurring when he was in his own car and promptly got out and made his way towards the couple. He then forced the man out of his car, holding him at gunpoint until police arrived. Passers by witnessed the intense standoff, and most were unsure as to what exactly was happening.
“We expected crowds and long return lines, but we never expected to see that,” witness Lindsey Bryant said. Bryant and her sister, Mistina Doland, dialed 911 when they saw the standoff.
“It was intense not knowing whether bullets were going to start flying from either side of the street,” Doland said.
Police arrived on the scene “seconds” after they were called, according to CBS Local. They soon realized that the man was trying to help, and arrested 28-year-old MacMichael Nwaiwu for assaulting his female passenger. The man with the gun reportedly had a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
“While we commend this citizen’s willingness to get involved in order to protect a victim of crime, the Southlake Police Department does not encourage the public to expose themselves in such a manner,” Southlake Police Chief Steve Mylett said, adding that they “strongly recommend” that people call 911 if they witness any criminal activity.
Despite authorities advising others not to take such extreme measures in similar situations, Bryant and Doland said they believe the man is a hero.
“We need more people like that,” Bryant said. “I hope more people see this and are willing to go the extra mile for someone who like this woman, didn’t have a voice and couldn’t speak up for herself.”
