Phillip Hughes, the Australia batsman struck on the head by a bouncer two days ago, has died.
The 25-year-old passed away after injuries sustained while batting for South Australia against New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday. Australia team doctor Peter Brukner said he never regained consciousness.
Hughes, who also played for Hampshire, Middlesex and Worcestershire, was struck by a short-pitched ball from Sean Abbott.
Australian prime minister Tony Abbott described Hughes as a ‘young man living out his dream’ and said: ‘It’s a very sad day for cricket and a heartbreaking day for his family.
The England cricket team, who are currently in Sri Lanka for a one-day series, have cancelled today’s media conference after the shock death.
‘For a young life to be cut short playing our national game seems a shocking aberration.’
Former England cricket captain Sir Ian Botham tweeted:
Shane Warne has said he “cannot describe the sadness” felt after learning the “horrific news” that Australian batsman Phil Hughes has died.
