We Could All Have Benefited From Reading This Letter As Kids
A primary school has gone viral and received plaudits from parents and teachers from around the country after giving each of its year six students leaving letters that tell them ‘there are many ways of being smart’.
The letter, given to children from Barrowford Primary School in Lancashire after they received their Key Stage Two results and before they leave for secondary school, was sent with the intention of highlighting the students other gifts and talents besides test scores.
The letter tells students in detail that the exam results do not reflect their varying abilities as the exam board ‘do not know each of you the way your teachers do’.
‘They do not know that you can play a musical instrument or that you can dance or paint a picture.’
After listing the many attributes the children might have that aren’t tested, the letters finale is to remind them that ‘the scores you get will tell you something, but they will not tell you everything.’
Sadly, the letter isn’t an original idea, or even an original letter, as the text is lifted from a note to students from an American school last year. But is that really the point here? It will still have been the first time many of these students were shown this perspective.
